We’ve seen a lot of stainless steels come and go in the past 15 years, but Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205 / EN 1.4462) keeps proving its worth. It’s not just another “high-performance” grade – this one delivers where others fail. Think offshore platforms in the North Sea, chemical tanks handling aggressive acids, or bridges in coastal regions. What makes it special? The 50/50 ferritic-austenitic structure gives you a rare balance: yield strength over 450 MPa (that’s 50% higher than 304/316) without sacrificing toughness. And yes, we’ve tested it in real-world chloride-rich environments – its PREN ≥ 35 means it laughs at pitting and crevice corrosion where 316L would struggle.
Where It Shines (And Why Customers Keep Coming Back)
One of our offshore clients switched from 316L to 2205 for their subsea manifolds. After three years, zero SCC (stress corrosion cracking) – a common headache for standard austenitics in saltwater. That’s the magic of its dual-phase microstructure and 22% chromium + 3% molybdenum combo. We’ve also had chemical processors use it in heat exchangers (up to 300°C) and pressure vessels where thermal cycling is brutal. Thanks to low thermal expansion, warping is rarely an issue.
- Welding? It’s no nightmare. With proper preheating (150–200°C) and ER2209 filler, we’ve seen flawless TIG/MIG results in our facility.
- Cost? Nickel prices keep climbing, but 2205’s lower nickel content (5%) makes it a smart long-term bet versus 300-series grades.
- Custom needs? We cut, drill, or bend plates (0.5–100mm thick) to your specs – whether it’s a 2B finish for food processing or an etched surface for architectural panels.
