Choose two numbers that work together: the aperture (opening) and the wire diameter (gauge). Aperture decides what passes through and how open the mesh feels; wire diameter sets rigidity and dent resistance. Pick the opening for the job first, then step the wire to get the stiffness you need.
What the specs really mean
Pitch vs aperture: Pitch is center-to-center; aperture is the clear gap. For square mesh, aperture ≈ pitch − wire.
Percent open area (POA): For square mesh, POA ≈ (aperture² / (aperture + wire)²) × 100%. More POA means better airflow/visibility but less stiffness.
Example: 12.7 mm pitch with 2.0 mm wire → ~10.7 mm opening, ~71% POA. With 3.0 mm wire → ~9.7 mm opening, ~58% POA and stiffer panels.
Material & coating
- GBW: pre-galvanized wire; cost-effective for general fencing/cages.
- GAW: galvanized after weld; coats welds; longer outdoor life.
- Stainless 304/316: 304 for indoor and hygiene; 316 for coastal/chemical splash.
- PVC coated: pleasant handling; confirm UV grade for outdoor runs.
Use-case recipes
- Machine guards / partitions: 25 × 25 mm with 3.0–3.5 mm wire (rigid panels).
- Animal enclosures (small): 12.7 × 12.7 mm with 1.2–1.6 mm wire; stainless for humid areas.
- Pest-proof vents: 6 × 6 mm with 0.8–1.2 mm wire; stainless for hygiene.
- Perimeter fencing: 50 × 50 mm with 2.5–3.0 mm wire; choose GAW or 316 near coast.
Panels vs rolls
Panels stay flat and square—best for frames. Rolls are faster for long runs and uneven ground but may carry set-in curvature; plan bracing.
Spec line (copy/paste)
- Mesh: Welded, square 25 × 25 mm aperture, wire ⌀ 3.0 mm
- Material/finish: GAW / 304 / 316 (choose)
- Size: Panels 1200 × 2400 mm (or rolls 1200 mm × 30 m)
- Edges: Trimmed; outside wires welded; no sharp projections
- Flatness: Panels lie flat on a 5 mm feeler over 1 m
- Packing: Corner protectors; strapped to pallet; moisture guard for sea freight
Arrival checks
- Measure aperture and wire at several spots; record averages.
- Light pry on welds—no pop or zinc peel.
- Lay panels flat; check for bow/twist.
FAQs
Q: Order by gauge numbers?
A: Gauge systems vary—always state wire diameter in mm.
Q: Panel or roll?
A: Panel for flat/square assemblies; roll for long, flexible runs.
